Jets Open Door To Rookie Talent January 18th, 2010
Coventry Jets have announced that their on field
preparations will begin on Sunday the 31st of January with their annual
rookie induction day at the Alan Higgs Centre. The event will have a new format
this year beginning with an introduction to the Jets from former London
Monarch, star wide receiver and Sky Sports analyst, Mark Cohen. The inductees
will then be taken outside to the 3G pitch to participate in a series of
measurable tests in the style of the NFL's scouting combine.
Hopefuls will also be put through their paces by the Jets coaching staff as
they're introduced to each position and given a brief on their role. Another
former Monarch, Rowelle Blenman, the Jets' Defensive Co-ordinator, will be
looking for future stars to emerge such as Dominic Olney, Parm Sidhu and
Shadrach McCook, graduates of previous rookie camps.
Retired Head Coach and Jets' Hall of Famer Gerry McManus, now General Manager,
is excited about the club's seventh season "it seems ridiculous to say
having made the final last season but we were in the midst of a rebuilding
process. That continues this year as we're still looking to replace a lot of
the guys that retired after winning Britbowl XXII. We picked up a lot of good
youngsters out of college in 2009 but we still ran with probably the smallest
squad in the Premier last year".
McManus continued "it was evident in the final last season that we stayed
with the Blitz through the first half but struggled to match them after the
break as they had so much depth and our boys began to tire. This event is
vital, unearthing new talent through the rookie camp helps us sustain the
team's long term future". The rookie day begins at 13:00 but candidates
should arrive at least 15 minutes early for registration. Participants are
asked to bring footwear suitable for astroturf, warm training clothing, ie. a
tracksuit, and bottled water or a sports drink. Entrance will cost £2 and those
that wish to join will be given a Jets welcome pack.
