Junior Flag Report
July 1st, 2010

The Coventry Jets junior flag team enjoyed a thrilling victory in the second of five BAFL tournaments this year, relying on both new and old players to forge three victories on the day. In the first game against cross town rivals the Cougars, Tee Nguyen, making her first start on defence, had 3 sacks and 5 tackles including 2 for a loss. The Cougars whole offensive plan in the second half seemed to revolve around trying to cope with her, which they never quite managed as the Jets held them scoreless for a 32-0.

In the second game against the Marlow Wolves, veteran Brad Bowers made a couple of key 4th down conversions taking one to the house in a tight battle, where converted extra points made the difference as the hosting Jets edged a tight game 16-12.In the final game quarterback Tom Clancy picked apart the London Blitz defence with passes to Josh Key, who finished the day with over 100 yards receiving. First year standout Tim Steel helped close the game out with his now obligatory interception to make safe an 18-13 victory and ensure a clean sweep of the tournament.

Experienced Head Coach Andrew Gambrill, although delighted with his youngster’s performance added “the key was the way the team played for each other and supported each other as they dealt with a strong Marlow comeback and a really close battle with the Blitz. When mistakes were made, they rallied around each other”. The Jets move on to the third tournament in Solihull on the 3rd of July with their sights set on qualification for this year’s finals in Worcester in September.
