Junior Flag Report
July 7th, 2010

Two victories for the Jets Junior flag team at this season’s third tournament were enough to complete a satisfying day for Coach Gambrill and his side as they cemented themselves comfortably into a finals day spot with two tournaments still to play. Despite a policy of ensuring their rookies saw significant game time, victories over Standish Raiders, 42-6, and Chorley Buccaneers, 26-14, and a narrow loss to Marlow Wolves, 26-20, gave them second place overall in the tournament.

With the twin quarterback threat of AJ Mepstead & Tom Clancy combining well to keep the offence moving, with touchdown strikes to possession receiver Josh Keys and the ever elusive Brad Bowers, the Jets were always a threat to score. Adding to the Jets already impressive arsenal of offensive weapons, Shannon Haines scored the first touchdown of her career.

Defensively, missing pick off king Tim Steel, and with Tee Nguyen unable to complete the day due to injury, opponents still struggled to break down the Jets. Veteran Hannah Russell-Yarde made life very difficult for the opposing quarterbacks and the industrious Stephen Pinks showed great hustle to lead the team in tackles.

Head Coach Andrew Gambrill clearly proud of his protégés progress, gave an insight into his philosophy. “If a youngster attends practice regularly and gives the team maximum effort, they are guaranteed game time, and almost all of them flourish in this system.” The Jets are looking confidently towards tournament four, again at Solihull’s Tudor Grange Stadium on July 24that 11am.
